How to Repair a Three Handle Shower Valve
Ask This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey repairs and replaces a leaking shower valve. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Time: 3-4 hours Cost: $80 Skill Level: Moderate Tools List for Repairing a Three Handle Shower Valve: Screwdriver Slip joint pliers Tub sockets Adjustable open ended wrench Shopping List: Drop cloth Shower valve replacement kit Shower valve stems Steps: 1. Shut off the water at the main water shutoff. 2. Put a drop cloth in the tub to protect it from any work and also to prevent small parts from falling down the drain. 3. Remove the handles from the valves using the screwdriver. They’re usually under small covers that read “hot” and “cold”. 4. Remove the escutcheons from the valves. They can usually be loosened by hand. 5. Unscrew the valve bodies from the wall with the slip joint pliers and the tub sockets. 6. Replace the seats for the valves. They should come in the repair kit. 7. Put the new stems into the valves and tighten them with the tub socket. 8. Tighten the bonnets on each of the stems with the open-ended adjustable wrench. 9. Screw the trim from the replacement kit over the stem and then put the escutcheons on over the trim. 10. Add the handles to the stems and screw them in with a screwdriver. Be sure to have the “hot” and “cold” labels installed right side up so they’re easier to read. 11. Turn the water back on. Resources: Three-handle shower valves are no longer up to code due to a risk of scalding, and should be replaced with a single-handle, pressure-balanced one, particularly if the shower is used regularly or will be used by children. Pressure-balanced shower valves can be found at home centers or plumbing supply stores. You can also purchase cover plates that can hide holes left behind in the tiles when the valves are swapped. When repairing existing three-handle valves, finding the correct components requires some detective work. Home centers have a book you case use to help you match up the correct parts, or you can go to a plumbing supply store and they will usually have the parts that you need. Tub sockets and the other materials required to complete this project can also be found at home centers and plumbing supply stores. How to replace a cockspur window handle on a uPVC window
Window and Door Parts Ireland - How to replace a cockspur handle on an old uPVC window Another great instructional video brought to you by https://www.windowanddoorparts.ie In this video I’m going to show you how to replace a cockspur handle on an old uPVC window Cockspur window handles are usually found on aluminium and old uPVC windows. The spur on the handle closes down over a plastic wedge on the window frame to close and lock the window. Cockspur window handles come in a number of heights. The height is measured from the underside of the spur to the bottom of the base of the handle. 21mm, 17mm & 13mm are usually found on old uPVC windows and 9mm are found on aluminium windows. The cockspur window handle in this video is an adjustable cockspur window handle. The height of the spur can be adjusted using plastic wedges and screws that come with the handle. Without a wedge the height is 21mm, with the smallest wedge it measures 17mm, the middle size wedge it measures 13mm and with the biggest wedge it measures 9mm. So we can see here there isn’t much left of the old cockspur window handle. The reason the handle broke on this window is because the hinges are broken. When the hinges are strained or broken they do not move freely as they should. This in turn takes extra force to open and close the window, and all the extra force is put on the window handle which causes it to break. The hinges on this window will need to be replaced. Check out our video on how to replace the hinges on a uPVC window (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnwT09QNZ2g) Now in this case the required height is 21mm so we don’t need the wedges that come with the handle. • Start off by removing the screws holding the old handle. • Use a Stanley knife or sharp chisel to remove any burrs from the old screw holes. The burrs can stop the handle from sitting flush against the sash. • Line the handle up over the plastic wedge. • Important – Reuse the existing screws and the existing holes. In a lot of these old uPVC windows, the glazing is situated directly behind the window handle. Using longer screws will break the glass. If you need to use new screws, use screws the same length. If in any doubt of the position of screws, I would definitely recommend removing the glazing before fitting the new handle. You have been warned. • Screw the first screw into place, then line up the other holes and screw in the remaining screws. • Test the operation of the handle and then to finish the job fit the screw cover cap. Antique Hand Vise Restoration With Burl Handle!
Click here to see the products used in this video https://amzn.to/2FwUDnC We found this hand vise in an estate auction a few weeks back, even though this is an inexpensive tool it was one of my favorite finds at the auction. I used a piece of scrap from an Elm burl I had laying around for the handle and turned a brass ferrule on the lathe and applied some raw linseed oil and it turned out pretty nice! The jaws didn't align very good so I worked them over with a file and sandpaper. This tool should prevent some burned fingers from holding small parts at the buffer!

Axe & Hammer Handle Replacement - How to do it OldSchool
How to do-it-yourself instructional on replacing wooden handles on axes and sledgehammers using traditional wooden wedges and steel wedge staking. Transcript provided for the hearing impaired: Alright so today on Repairs101 I've collected a whole bunch of tools over here that need their handles replaced and I've got a bunch of wooden handles and I'm going to show you how it's done. So this is definitely an example of how not to secure your handle to your tool head. You want to get the old handle out by whatever means necessary. It's critically important that you know where the bottom of the kerf is so that you can insert it properly into the tool head - so mark it with a pencil. Fit the handle through a series of trials observing where the witness marks indicate the base of the tool head lands in relation to the bottom of the kerf. Never pound the handle on the ground or hit it with a steel striking surface like a hammer, it will crack the handle base. Instead choose a nice beating stick from your firewood pile, something with a little heft. You can use any number of tools to reduce the handle including the axe head itself. I've collected quite a number of rasps and rifflers over the years as I like to do the odd bit of wood carving. Or you could use some sandpaper, say one twenty grit or something even coarser. Again, it's critically important that the base of the head extend at least a half an inch beyond the bottom of the kerf. You want a tight fit with no gaps showing. A little carpenter's glue will make sure the wedge can never slip out. Now I've seen a lot of different styles of steel wedge placement in the past and I think the lesson there is that there is no one way to do it. They say more than one road leads to Rome and hey it's true! Check it out there's even an airport. You definitely want to counter-sink your steel wedges a little bit. You can turn a larger steel wedge diagonally to make sure it fits without touching on the edges. You see I didn't get this one quite centered but it'll be fine. Recently I've been using Mineral Oil to protect wood because it's cheap, non-toxic and available at almost any pharmacy.

Leaky Shower Handle Repair -- Homeowner's How-To Guide to Replacing old Washer in Faucet Tap
I won't be paying a plumber to fix my leaking shower handle when I can repair it myself with $3.84 in parts from the hardware store. Here's a step-by-step guide to my repair process of fixing my shower faucet handle, which was leaking badly. Turned out (as is usually the case with leaking fixtures) that it was a badly worn washer inside the stem. A pretty easy fix if you have the right tools and about an hour to fix it. Good luck -- hope this helps. Please note that I am not a professional plumber. Just a homeowner with a camera and a desire to save some bucks.

Making overly ergonomic handle for rusty file - OLD TOOL RESTORATION
I found this old rusty file for around 3 euros. It as a fair price as the file part costs easily 20 euros. It was a little quite rusty, the file was a little dull and the handle was made of cardboard for some reason. Because the file handle the actual file is attached to, I does only allow one to use the file on one side there was no need to use straight handle which is no very comfortable . Because of this I designed a more ergonomic curved handle. On which I added a steel band with custom etched design to give it the extra style it needed. I also was orginally going to carve a checker design on the handle but as I found a piece of oak with the exact curve in the grain I wanted, that just felt like a little too much. The steel collar was etched with electrolysis. I first used 1mm thick tape to mask my design then painted over it with just a basic primer and removed the tape to allow have only the previously taped areas to etch. You can find a lot of tutorials regarding this on the internet so I won't be writing too brief instructions for for safety reasons. I used vinegar to remove rust from the other parts of the file and after removing the handle. I had them there overnight which felt like enough. besides rust removal the mild acid bath will also sharpen the file. This is a simple and cheap way to give your old dull files a new life. I used the freshly sharpened file to round the the part of the handle that fits the collar. I know there would have been easier ways but I wanted to do this to test out sharpened file. Plus how cool is it that I used the file to make a handle for itself An angle grinder and belt sander to sculpt the rough shape of the rest of the handle. A flap drum was used to finish the surface for an even finish. Then the collar was glued on with epoxy and the file was hammered in the hole of the handle. Thanks for watching! How To Handle A Home Intruder, Old Testament-Style
This is a brief excerpt from a teaching by Jerry Robinson entitled "The Sword in the Old Testament" that examines the four extraordinary exceptions for justified killing as found in the Mosaic Law. Watch the entire teaching here... The Sword in the Old Testament (Part 1) - https://truerichesradio.com/the-sword-in-the-old-testament-part-1/ The Sword in the Old Testament (Part 2) - https://truerichesradio.com/the-sword-in-the-old-testament-part-2/ One such exception of justified killing is recorded in the book of Exodus 22, which details a number of property laws extending to the Israelites under the Mosaic Law. According to Exodus 22:2,3: "If the thief is caught while breaking in and is struck so that he dies, there will be no bloodguiltiness on his account. [But] if the sun has risen on him, there will be bloodguiltiness on his account. He shall surely make restitution; if he owns nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. If what he stole is actually found alive in his possession, whether an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall pay double.” This is an extraordinary passage as it is one of only three other instances described in the Old Testament where an individual Israelite (non-state actor) may legally kill another individual and not be found bloodguilty. The purpose of this law is clear: An Israelite, awoken by an intruding thief onto his property in the middle of the night, would naturally seek to defend himself, his family, and his property. If the break-in occurred in the dark of night, the Israelite’s reaction would obviously have been accidental and/or purely in self-defense. However, this provision only applies if the intruding thief is found in the middle of the night. If he is found in the light of day, the Israelite may not take the thief’s life, or else he is liable for murder and must be stoned to death. Some modern-day Christians often point to this passage to condone acts of self-defense against a home intruder. But does this verse extend to condone acts of self-defense by the Christian living under the New Covenant? Watch the entire teaching here... The Sword in the Old Testament (Part 1) - https://truerichesradio.com/the-sword-in-the-old-testament-part-1/ The Sword in the Old Testament (Part 2) - https://truerichesradio.com/the-sword-in-the-old-testament-part-2/ incoming searches: self-defense in the bible, what does the bible say about self-defense, mosaic law

Antique Rusty Cleaver Restoration
Paid two bucks at a local flea market for this old, rusty cleaver. It did not look like much and hat a lot of rust pitting on one side, the handle was ruined and had severe blow marks on the spine. The seller seemed surprised I took it. As you can see in the video, as soon as I took the first layer of rust out, the makers mark became visible. It is made by an old German company named DANKRE, that specialized in kitchen cutlery. After all the rust was removed, it became visible that the cleaver was made from two different types of steel, one hard for the cutting edge and one softer for the main body and spine, so it can better take shocks. From this I get this was a good quality tool that deserves to be restored.
