League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Captain Nemo's Full Size, Practical Nautilus Car

1979 ratings | 664712 views
Set in an alternate version of the late 19th Century, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a unique story featuring an odd assortment of legendary fictional Victorian characters who join up to foil "The Fantom" who is trying to start a World War. The League consists of Allan Quatermaine (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo (Maseeruddin Shah), Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Tom Sawyer (Shane West), Dr Jekyll (Jason Flemyng) and Rodney Skinner AKA The Invisible Man (Tony Curran). This amazing adventure came from the creative mind of Alan Moore who is responsible for some of the renowned graphic novels of recent years including V For Vendetta, Watchmen and From Hell. Although the movie is star studded and was made on a very high budget, it seems to be Captain Nemo's immense car which captured the imagination of the cinema going public. The striking vehicle was used for a number of scenes and even featured on the poster. The Nautilus Car was designed by Carol Spier and of course entirely custom made for the production. The basic starting point, the chassis, is from a Land Rover Fire Tender. A unique fibreglass body was then added and a steel sub frame then constructed in the engine bay to house the Rover V8 engine required to power it. 6 enormous wheels, measuring 28 inches (72 cm) in diameter complete the basic car. The whole car also raises and lowers itself in spectacular style via a powerful hydraulic system. It is the detail and finish on the car is what really sets it apart from any other vehicle ever seen on the silver screen. Captain Nemo, also known as Prince Dakkar, was created by Jules Verne in 1870. The classic Nemo was the son of the Raja of Bundelkund. Moore's comic book version suggests he might be a Sikh. The Hindu heritage is very prominent in the detailing and the accoutrements adorning the vehicle. To the front, either side of a vast decorative radiator grille are two representations of Ganesha, the Hindu deity. The elephant motif is repeated on the door handles. Other panels and sections all over the car feature carvings of Gods and symbols. These spectacular flourishes are finished in a gold colour dressed down by the art department to look aged and weathered. The same level of attention continues within the cockpit area with intricate mouldings and decorations throughout. The upholstery is faux light brown leather with a Silver band running along the top. The back seat is curved. The off white paint work is finished in a flat tone with a deliberately cracked and crazed finish. There are some minor repairs and changes in colour dotted around the bodywork, evidence of running repairs on-going during filming. The original hard top is no longer present. There were only 2 cars made for filming, this one is the only complete running version. The other had scaffolding permanently fixed around the seats to house the cameras for close ups on the actors. This car is spectacular. It measures 22 feet long and 9 feet wide. It is not suitable or legal for road use but the car still runs beautifully and retains most of its original functionality. The car will, according to those who have driven it, reach 80 miles an hours and will corner superbly! Since filming completed the car has featured at motor shows in Essen Germany and in London. It also starred in the famous Lord Mayors Parade in London. For more 'Extraordinary' movie memorabilia, check out the official Prop Store website: http://www.propstore.com/category/movie-props/

Love that crackle finish paint job, that should be offered for cars!
Arnaud Z (7 months ago)
Yes, the technic exists, but in the movie it is a shiny white, not a cracked white This is not a real car, it was build for a movie, with a low budget and few time, looks at the engine bay ..., so the body was made to look good, but was not made to resist long , the fiber glass, gel coat and paint are dead becose of a bad storage Take a look on the steering wheel..., in the movie it was an aluminium color, but in this youtube video(2:23) the steering wheel is completly used and rusted... ^^
the artist (7 months ago)
@Arnaud Z Actually you're wrong, I used to do finishes like this when I worked for the Hollywood scenic companies, this is a brand new car they made, then added the finish. Here you go– https://goo.gl/bxLc7b

If only I had the money I would buy a replica and make it a real legal Road working car with either a steel or aluminum hand-built coach body with a reinforced chassis, an old Merlin V12 or Cadillac V16 or maybe something along the lines as an old 24 cylinder Merlin or Rolls-Royce airplane or boat motor and how about decked out with some copper trim, but unfortunately I'm poor
saintsrown (1 year ago)
Don't know bout you but I'd feel pretty stupid driving this thing.
Desert Fox (1 year ago)
The hubcaps should've been more ornate like the rest of the car, maybe like the middle of the steering wheel.

Urg! The music has to be so freaking overwhelmingly loud and obnoxious. Personally, I would have preferred an explanation of the cars details. Thx for posting though. One of thee most iconic screen cars. Prop, movie cars aren't made for more than screen time, than discarded or bought and stored in a collection or museum.

This is the real movie car, built in 4 weeks. To see a much better version, check out Ken from North Carolina.
Pertev Aky00 (1 year ago)
Someone needs to build an updated more high-graded version of this car with an actual perfectly working suspension, driving components and a proper engineered chassis. A hexa-turbo V18 engine would be perfect for it. Also a better looking desgin.
gyneve (1 year ago)
Someone should stuff a WWII spitfire motor under the hood/bonnet.
Nev Anderson (11 months ago)
With a Merlin under the hood, it would promptly go sideways into a tree. Doesn't even look a comfortable drive, idling around the lawn.

If it had 2 more wheels in the back, you could just keep driving without giving a crap about having a flat. Oh well 7 wheels to go.

Hollywood, if its behind the scenes it doesn't matter.
Cass_Michael (2 years ago)
Fun Fact, Jeremy Clarkson is the owner of this car, He said that he "Only drive(s) it on cool nights when the weather is fair and the traffic is sparse."
Arcona (7 months ago)
@White Baron Where Jeremy doesn't live.
Arcona (1 year ago)
The traffic would have to be sparse, it's not road legal.

Sad stuff under the hood. Looked like a little Rover V8 with all the dirt from 1974 with it. Otherwise, a really nice car. Would be cool to see a removeable hardtop for it.

The chassis is from a Land Rover Fire Tender.

Sure looks like he invested 6500 hours under that hood.
yahoo (1 year ago)
Thank God I have a vintage 70s Challenger. Don't need a 40 thousand dollar 20 foot long car to pretend to look extravagant and rich. Even then keep this car a million miles away from me with all it's fake god diety Hindu worship and demons. We get it you can't get rich in this world without denouncing Christ and being a Satanist no need to rub it in our damn faces
ray west (1 year ago)
No, this is the real movie car, POS built in 4 weeks, not Ken's 6500 hour build replica.
